ABSTRACT 1

Safety in Numbers - A Consortium Approach to Pathway Programme Provision

Dr Terry Jeves
Academic Director, NCUK

Northern Consortium UK (NCUK) is an education organisation established in 1987 and owned by eleven British universities.  It was set up to prepare international students for study at its ‘owner’ universities and its primary mission is to supply the owners with appropriately qualified students.  NCUK achieves this aim by providing high quality pathway programmes that are backed by robust quality assurance.  NCUK programmes are currently offered in nine countries worldwide.  Since 1987 over 10,000 students have progressed to NCUK partner universities following study on NCUK academic programmes.

The aim will be to give an overview of NCUK, its programmes, its approach to quality assurance and how it operates.  There will also be consideration of the advantages and disadvantages and strengths and weaknesses of an organisation owned by a number of universities, which represent the diversity of UK higher education.  Evidence will be presented to address the question – ‘does it work for all stakeholders?’  It is hoped that this overview will provide a stimulus for questions both following the presentation and throughout the conference.  Equally, it will provide the foundation for an ‘international theme’ session looking in greater detail at the opportunities and challenges in delivering pathway programmes offshore.

ABSTRACT 2

Offshore Pathway Provision – Opportunities and Challenges

Dr Terry Jeves
Academic Director, NCUK

NCUK pathway programmes have been offered in China since 1999.  This session will build on the earlier NCUK ‘overview’ and look in more detail at the opportunities and challenges for delivering pre-university provision in this large and growing market.  Topics will include opportunities and constraints, finding appropriate partners, developing and implementing an effective curriculum and ensuring effective quality assurance.
